Luminous (US based company backed by Bill Gates) it trying to build chips that use light to move data and carry out calculations.
Being the spin of an electron in a qubit, or the wavelength of a photon in a "waveguide", the future of chips is going to be in the realm of quantum computing.

By using different colors of light to move multiple pieces of data through waveguides at the same time, it can outstrip the data-carrying capabilities of conventional electrical chips.
