Quantum computers may eventually crunch through currently unapproachable problems, improving the transmission of electric power or the manufacture of energy-intensive fertiliser, or simply sifting through impracticably large data sets. However, long before then computing systems that still fall far short of a general-purpose machine are likely to start providing solutions in industries such as finance, energy and aerospace, and even help with things as mundane as recommendation engines.
